I just made a reservation for our family of four (my husband and I, our daughters 11 and 13)at the doubletree Guest Suites hotel for 6 nights July 26 - Aug 1. My husband did Red Sox fantasy camp this winter and will get the chance to play at Fenway at the end of July. So we are making a family vacation From NJ to do the historical stuff, etc.
Having a suite where we can close a door is great and they have a pool which we wanted, but was concerned that I was unfamiliar with the neighborhood. Is it safe? In addition, was wondering if it was too far removed from all the other sites except Harvard (which we want to see). On the other hand all four of us love downtown city travel- explorig neighborhoods, restaurants, etc. I know we will want to do the north end, Newberry street (butchered the spellig I bet), etc. So we would like suggestions for hotels and itineraries.
Is Doubletree guest suites in a safe area? Any other ideas
Just to make sure you are talking about the one on 400 Soldiers Field Road???

If you are talking about the Soldiers field road one, I wouldn%26#39;t classify it as %26#39;unsafe%26#39; but it IS inconveniently located ...
Have you checked out the Marriot Residence Inn at Tudor Wharf? It%26#39;s also suites, on the Freedom trail in the Charlestown neighborhood, a short walk to the North End (Italian Neighborhood) with T water shuttles and buses quite close by.
The one on the river isn%26#39;t a neighborhood. It is just the hotel with a train yard next to it. It sits near the Mass Pike.
During the day you will see lots of runners. Walking the river in any direction is very safe. If you wanted to wander across into Cambridge, this is safe too.
The question on being far removed: you should use the search engine. This same question recently came up.
It is perect for Harvard. You will see the buildings along the river which are missed when taking the train.
I have several friend from NJ stay here and love it. I am sure there is no connection, thought I would throw it out there.
yes that is the one I am talking about - the 400 Soldiers Field
I tried looking for similar previous posts but did not know how on the site other than going through each page. I had thought of the Mrriott Residence on Tudor wharf. For some reason that seemed inconvenient with having to rely on a water taxi. Are those taxis frequent?
Another option would be a downtown hotel that has two queen size beds as opposed to two doubles and my budget can accomodate perhaps up to 250/night. Does that get me this type of lodging with a pool in Boston? I know it doesn%26#39;t locally here in NYC

You don%26#39;t need to rely on a water taxi at Tudor Wharf. The T runs a water shuttle that will be covered if you by the $15 unlimited use T-pass. You can also walk to North Station in under 15 minutes and get the green line or orange line. You can pick up at T bus right there that goes to downtown ...
If I had to choose between the Doubletree in Cambridge and Tudor Wharf based ONLY on location, Tudor wharf would win hands down.
I agree with Forgot

Doubletree is perfectly safe, bc there is nothing really around it. The hotel has regular shuttles to Harvard Square, Copley Square and the Boston Common You can walk to Harvard Square on a nice day, if you are up for it. I would not do this at night, but during the day it is perfectly safe. It is a nice hotel for families bc of the suites and the pool.
The Marriott Residence Inn Tudor Wharf will be over your budget on those dates. An excellent option for you could be The Radisson Boston. It`s in a great Back Bay/Theatre District central location adjacent to 2 subway stops; Arlington and Boylston. They have spacious rooms with 2 queen beds and private balconies. The higher floor rooms have spectacular city views. Rate for just the room on those dates for 4 of you is $219. There is a family breakfast package for 4 (full buffet breakfast) for $229 and a family breakfast and parking package for $239. These are outstanding values. There is also a very nice, recently renovated indoor pool. If I can`t convince you, check the tripadvisor reviews. This property ranks #9 for hotels in Boston. If you have even a slight interest I would suggest booking this ASAP as it is fully cancellable until the day before arrival. This is a very busy time in Boston.
