We%26#39;re planning to take the Island Queen Ferry to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard on a Sunday in June and want to see as much of the island as we can in that day. We are undecided between doing the 2 1/2 hour tour to give us a taste of the area and then perhaps spending the rest of the day between Edgartown and Oak Bluffs, hiring a car and touring ourselves or doing the ';How do I see the Island in One Day Tour'; with Vineyard Transit (this seems like a lot of changing buses, etc.). Any help or advice would be appreciated particularly if the best option is to hire a car as we would need help with the best routes to take. Thanks a lot.

Tour Island in One Day
Hi, the island is not that large - the distance between Oak Bluffs %26amp; Edgartown is only about 7 miles - easy on and off the bus. I think the best option is the 2.5 hour tour to see the Island and then the bus ride between the two towns. The bus lets you off in the center of each town and both are small and easy to walk. Restaurants, shops, etc are all accessible. You save yourself the hassle of parking and the money for renting a car on the island.
Tour Island in One Day
Taking the tour bus is $29/person. You can rent an economy size car for the day for about $65. This will allow you to tour the island on your own time and see much more than the guided tour. You can definitely enjoy more than 2.5 hrs on the island.
tough choice. you will be able to see more if you rent a car. but you will have to get some really good guidebooks to decide where to go and to understand what you are seeing. A bus tour will explain more but give you less time. For instance, the gingerbread houses in Oak Bluffs are a unique attraction which is easily missed and you would not get the history without a guide or guidebook.
