It was a drop dead gorgeous evening after a busy week so we decided no cooking tonight ... we headed over to Salem Willows for some cheap eats, arcade fun, and people watching. We stopped at the ';Salem Lowe'; Chinese restaurant for a chop suey sandwich and couldn%26#39;t help but notice that a few of the staffers there were wearing TripAdvisor baseball caps!
Tripadvisor and chop suey sandwiches?
Funny....did you mention that you post?
Tripadvisor and chop suey sandwiches?
I didn%26#39;t. They were very busy and two of the people in caps were cooking in the back. One was taking orders .
TA is based in the area, so they may have known someone who worked there -- but oddly enough, TA sent me a hat, God only knows why, I%26#39;m usually an irritant to the average visitor... hey maybe a plea for me to be nice to others?
But a chop suey sammy? Mmmm. Even at 6:00 AM, that sounds pertty good. I lived in Salem years ago (%26#39;bout when Washington was forming his Navy up there. I lived on Wash St. N. in a home the tour buses passed by and commented upon. On occasion, I%26#39;d drink my morning coffee from a beer bottle on the front step and wave to the tourists. Ah, good times. The Salem Visitor%26#39;s Bureau was pleased when I moved!
Funny LoonMountainMan ... given what they%26#39;ve done to exploit the whole witch thing, I would have thought they%26#39;d welcome ';local characters';.
Chop Suey Sandwiches!!!
Forgotmypword,
How much are they charging for those sandwiches this season?
Wow, That brings me back to my childhood. My Dad would treat us to them. (I think they cost about dime or a quarter?) If we spent the whole day at Salem Willows on our way home, my parents would stop at Kelly%26#39;s on Revere Beach and buy themselves clams and buy us kids fish plates at Kelly%26#39;s. I think the fish plates were pretty cheap like 75 cents or $ 1.25 I don%26#39;t remember? Fried Clams cost just little more but they were not nearly as costly as they are today!
I bought a chop suey sandwich for my Mom at Salem Willows about two years ago (for nostalgic sake) and I still think they are still pretty cheap.
Remay, a Chop Suey sandwich is $1.76 which comes to $1.85 if you add the sales tax !!!
I grew up in Peaobdy and on Fridays, my Mom used to get fish and chips at Vic%26#39;s in Danvers. It was something like 25 cents a plate ... she claimed she couldn%26#39;t cook fish at home that inexpensively!
Vic%26#39;s is long gone, but I%26#39;ve been told that the Sylvan Street Grill is run by the same people. The old Vic%26#39;s sign is on display in the restaurant and hte onion rings and clams are excellent (just like I remember them from my youth.)
