Boston-Provincetown overnight itinerary

I would like to take an overnight trip from Boston to Cape Cod/Provincetown upon my arrival at BOS, June 26th.

I am planning to rent a car at the airport and drive to Provincetown on Friday ( I arrive around 11 am) , spend the night in Provincetown or along the way at B%26amp;B ( any suggestions for a unique B%26amp;B?)

and return back on Saturday evening back to Boston for a meeting I have to attend for the next few days.

I looked at the ferry service Boston-Provincetown as well and my ideal trip would involve rental car one way ( is this possible with any of the Boston/Provicetown/Cape Cod agencies?) and return via Ferry back to Boston ( I am staying at the Sheraton by Copley Place)

Please advise on best travel plan ( to avoid traffic and delays:-) and places worth stopping by

Traffic is unpredictable except on weekends in July/August when there WILL be traffic. Taking the ferry both ways probably makes more sense. You can make the calls to car agencies as easy as anyone here to see if you can get a 1 way rental. There are dozens of unique b%26amp;b%26#39;s throughout the Cape- just depends on your definition. Many are former Captain%26#39;s houses. Some are in the middle of a town, others are more rural. Also, a quick search in prior posts will give you lots of ideas and recommendations. Once you have narrowed down some choices, I am sure there are folks here who can give feedback.

I am a little unclear as t your plans. There IS a ferry from Boston to Provincetown, but it is pedestrian only - no cars! However, you could easily make this trip for a day without a car and enjoy Provincetown. This would make much more sense to me.

I thought that maybe combining the passenger ferry one way with a rental car the other way would give me the opportunity to have some different scenery along the way as I%26#39;ve never driven that route.

Do you recommend to just do a round trip ferry from Boston to Provincetown for a day trip instead?

If you want to drive you should be ahead of the traffic if out of logan by noon.

The mid point is Sandwich. This is the oldest town on the cape. The Belfry Inn or The Daniel Webster Inn are both nice.

Driving to the cape and boat back is appealing. I would think the boat over on Friday would be very crowded but not so on the return.

I think you will find it quite expensive to get a one-way rental. I think you%26#39;ll be much better off going both directions by the same means of transportation. In your situation, I would probably opt to rent a car, just to have the mobility on the Cape. Although I%26#39;m sure there will be some traffic, heading out there relatively early on Friday and returning Saturday night should allow you to miss the worst of it.

In my experience, there%26#39;s not much scenery on the drive to the Cape, unless you make a point of getting off the highway and finding spots on the shore.

Take the ferry both ways, but if you want to ride around the cape, rent a car in Ptown.

Before you book any transport options, get your room first. A lot of places on the Cape have a two-night minimum on summer weekends. Post on the Cape Cod forum for tips.

I think you have good advice above. Driving one way and ferry the other would be nice if you can look into car rentals and find one that is not too expensive.

If you just want to see Ptown you don%26#39;t need a car. You can visit the National Seashore and beaches by bus or bicycle. Ferry both ways would be the way to go.

If you want to see the rest of the Cape, you really need a car.

For timing, the ferry is 90 minutes. Driving is a little over an hour to the Cape Cod Canal, and about 2.5 hours to Ptown. Allow more time during rush hours. Traffic is not usually a problem when you get out of Boston except Friday night / Saturday morning going, and Sunday afternoon returning to Boston.

To maximize your very limited time, I would suggest doing the roundtrip ferry option and spending all your time in Provincetown. Provincetown`s charms are palpable and unique and you will find plenty to do and enjoy. baystatecruises.com has a trip leaving Boston at 1:00pm and there will be return trips on Saturday at 3:pm and 7:30pm. Roundtrip fare is $86 and certainly less than you`d spend on a car rental for 2 days. Your biggest challenge could be finding accomodations for just the one night. It will be the beginning of high season and also the start of a weekend and most establishments require at least a 2 night minimum stay. I would suggest checking with The Provincetown Chamber of Commerce at ptownchamber.com....you can go to accomodations and see an extensive list of inns and guesthouses. Then I would start calling the places that interest you and seeing if they can accomodate you for the one night.
