Visiting Hancock Shaker Village from Boston

Is it possible to visit the Hancock Shaker Village from Boston by train on a day trip? I%26#39;ve been told you can get a taxi from the station to the village itself. How far is it and roughly how much might it cost? Thanks.

The train from Boston to Pittsfield (which I believe is the closest station) takes almost 4 hours. Doesn%26#39;t sound like a very pleasant day trip to me.

Possible- yes

Fun- Not IMHO

Mapquest says it is about 5 miles from the Amtrak station to the Village so the taxi should not cost very much. Just seems like a very long day and you will be missing so much of the Berkshires without a car. I would suggest renting a car for a couple of days so you can visit Lenox, Williamstown or any of the other great towns in Western Ma.

Thanks for the advice. If we were to spend a night in the Berkshires, where would you suggest we stay (town, and possible guest houses that are good for families)?

Check out this recent thread for a discussion of towns in the Berkshires:

Lenox is quite close to Hancock Shaker Village and might make a good spot (although if I had to chose I%26#39;d go with Great Barrington as it offers more to see/do).

Lenox is right in the middle and there are so many places to stay in Lenox. I stay in a timeshare so I don%26#39;t know much about an individual B%26amp;B%26#39;s. There is alot on info on the forums or by a basic search. GB was suggested for a place to stay as well, which is a really neat town. If you like art, one gallery called the Vault is quite interesting, unique and relatively affordable

The Holston Gallery has a large selection of Chihuly glass if you know what that is. Almost like a museum, because it is not affordable (to me). I always have a hard time telling people where to stay since so little is known about what you like and people are staying in all the towns and enjoying themselves.

BTW, I don%26#39;t know if you said when you will be there but one of the great treats is to visit Tanglewood when you may be able to sit and have a picnic lunch while listening to the Symphony practice for that evenings performance--- FOR FREE

Thanks for all the suggestions, which have now given us several options to look into.

Coincidentally, I just visited HSV last weekend with the family - my photos are now on TA if you%26#39;re interested:

Thanks, Dan. That looks great. Are the trees already that colour in the spring??

Actually only the first 10 photos on that page are of Hancock Shaker Village this past weekend. I think the tree shots you are referring to are of Becket, Massachusetts from October :-). The trees around here are just now coming back to life from the winter and are generally green or flowering.
