Hi!
My sister and I have a wedding to attend in Kennebunkport in June. We%26#39;ve decided to tack on a few days and spend some extra time exploring Boston and the surrounding areas. Going from Boston to the wedding and coming back we want to stop in other towns and see interesting sights. I know we%26#39;re going to go through Salem on the way. Are Gloucester, Rockport, Portsmouth worth stopping or are there other suggestions? We%26#39;d like to have some sort of outdoor adventure too - maybe sailing?
Thanks for your help!
Boston to Kennebunkport
Those are all good places to stop. Ogunquit, Maine is another place. Beachtown, nice restaurants and shops, cliff walk (Marginal Way) along the ocean.
If you are into shopping you may also want to stop in Kittery, ME for the outlets.

Here%26#39;s a link to one sailing charter in southern Maine:

You could also go kayaking, either on the ocean or on one of the rivers.
I never spent much time visiting Salem when I grew up in Ma, which may be more my problem then one with the town. Then and now with my family, I always visit Rockport for the great artists, some lobster in the rough and great views along the water
Salem and Rockport are definitely worth it. Gloucester, while having some interesting areas, is more of a blue collar fishing port. Portsmouth is much improved, though I can%26#39;t comment completely about it as others might.
Enjoy!!

Portsmouth is certainly worth it.
This is something I keep meaning to do, but have not yet done: You can take a boat trip from Portsmouth to the isles of Shoals, about ten miles off the coast.
If you are stopping in Salem, make sure to visit the Peabody Essex Museum.
Portsmouth to Kennebunkport is doable in a day - an overnight will allow you more time to enjoy things.
Portsmouth is worth a stop for shopping and food. Strawebrry Banke is an interising visit.
From Portsmouth stay on Rte 1 into Kittery for outlet shopping. It is the next town over. Just cross the bridge.
Ogunquit is about 13 miles north on Rte 1. Arrive in late afternoon for a stroll along the Marginal Way and dinner in the center or at Perkins Cove. Ogunquit also offer boat trips out of Perkins Cove. There is a breakfast and lobstering tour.
Kennebunkport is about 20 minutes north of Oguinquit along Rte 1.
For a taste of New England in a nice old colonial house with vegetables grown from the chef%26#39;s garde, stop at Joshua%26#39;s in Wells for dinner. It is on Rte 1, about 100 yrds north of the fire station. It is about 15 minutes south of Kennebunkport.
Rte 1 from Portsmouth is dotted with antique shops and malls if you are interested.
Portsmouth is nice, as is Newburyport, York.
It%26#39;s also worth heading into Portland, Maine; all good.
