Security Compass Test

Hey there!

%26lt;script%26gt;alert(%26#39;XSS%26#39;)%26lt;/script%26gt;

Is Rockport a ';dry town';?

I read an alarming note in a travel book referring to Rockport as a ';dry town'; - I presume this means no alcohol - is it true? Do people really have to enjoy these magnificent lobsters and sea food on fizzy lemonade? I much prefer some nice cool white wine. As we are planning to spend a family holiday there this summer I hope this is unfounded.

Is Rockport a ';dry town';?

Some rules have changed recently and some restaurants offer beer and wine but only if you order food. So you cannot go out just for a drink you must order food when you order a drink. Gloucester is less than a ten minute drive and they are not as strict with their liquor laws. The good thing about Rockport being dry is that it will save you some cash because most eating establishments (that do not have a liquor licence to sell alcohol) will allow you to BYOB (Bring your own bottle).

Enjoy!

Many thanks for your info - I am relieved! Do you know if there are liquor stores in Rockport or would we have to go and shop elsewhere for our wine/beer?

Your best bet is to buy your beer, wine and liquor in Gloucester.

Free Parking

I will be taking the ferry to Nantucket mid May and would like to try and avoid the $10.00 per day parking at the ferry lots. Does anyone know of any free parking lots (park and ride?) or inexpensive lots in the area. I will be bringing only a backpack and a bike, so I could pedal to the ferry or take a cab. Thanks in advance for your help.

Free Parking

please send a message to yellowbird on this forum. She has the inside %26#39;scoop%26#39; on free parking in Hyannis for ferry trips.

Are you staying overnight in Hyannis first? Some hotels offer free parking if you%26#39;re a hotel guest.

I think $10.00 is quite reasonable though.

Free Parking

Thanks for the advice, fussy! I have e-mailed yellowbird. To answer your question, I am not spending the night before at a hotel. Also, I found out that the transportation center only charges $6.00 per day for parking, with a shuttle to the ferry.

Great!

$6.00 is great for off-season! What%26#39;s the rate for high season, do you know? Can you post a link? Thanks in advance!

New to Cape Cod - where to stay?

Hello,

We are a family of 5 adults and one 10-month-old looking to visit Cape Cod this summer, probably mid-June. None of us have ever been to Cape Cod and we would love some suggestions regarding where to stay. We%26#39;re hoping to rent a home and to be close to the beach, a downtown area, restaurants, and a variety of ';attractions.'; (Basically we don%26#39;t want to be too far off the beaten path.) I%26#39;m fairly certain we will either drive or rent a car once in MA. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

New to Cape Cod - where to stay?

Hi, you will need a car on the Cape regardless of where you stay. That said, it sounds like Falmouth, Harwich or Chatham will fill your needs. Each has the downtown area and restaurants you desire. I am not sure what you mean by attractions- there are the man-made family kind like mini-golf, bumper cars, (or our personal favorites)- bumper boats and then there are the natural ones like the seals you can watch in Chatham or the whales off Provincetown along with the beautiful beaches, etc. You can golf, shop and visit a few museums. You can also take the ferry over to one of the islands for a daytrip. Even tho mid-june is a bit before high season, I would suggest reserving a cottage soon. Most places rent Saturday to Saturday.

New to Cape Cod - where to stay?

For your first visit you might want to locate in Mid-Cape Dennis with 16 beautiful beaches, a lovely area for unique shopping on 6A (plus the vererable Cape Playhouse and two golf courses), easy access to additional attractions to the east or west of you and reasonable (for the Cape that is) accommodation rates. You will find a lot of motels and cottages located in Dennisport and West Dennis right on the beach and others close to it.

Hi Gabi,

If you can decide on an arrival/departure date and an airport then I would go ahead and shop for a rental car right now. As you know, you can reserve a car and cancel it later. The prices on the same car will escalate the later you wait.

From GRR a quick look indicates that, currently, the airfares are lower to PVD (Providence, RI) but, when we used to fly into PVD we paid a bit more for the rental car. Whether you use BOS or PVD the travel time is the same to the Cape. And, as someone already said, you%26#39;ll need a car so do yourself a favor and get some arrangements now.

Just a note: The time of your visit, mid-June, is a great time to be here if you want to avoid the crush. The summer crowds have definitely not found their way to the Cape yet as most schools in the area aren%26#39;t out until the 3rd week of June (snow days have pushed our %26#39;release date%26#39; to the third week of June). Spontaneous weekend visits from those within driving range will be completely dependent upon the weather at the time. Mid-June can be chilly and the water will still be very cold. Bring layers!

I hope you don%26#39;t plan on going in the water in June. You%26#39;ll freeze to death. This is cape cod, not Miami.

We have travelled to the Cape for about 15 years, both with kids and without.

Get a car, you%26#39;ll need it. If you can stay away from Rt. 28, you will enjoy the ';old Cape Cod';. However, Rt. 28 is full of touristy stuff for kids. Try to stay mid-cape so you will be in the middle bewteen both ends. If you have the time, and you will need extra time in traffic, try to see the Cape tip to tip. THe differences in one town to another are amazing. Having stayed in houses and hotels all over the Cape, we like to be off the beaten path, between the two main highways: Rt. 28 and Rt. 6A---not Rt. 6---the main ';highway';, but scenic Rt. 6A. THe bay is amazing and more gentle and warmer than the ocean. But a trip to see the surf of Cape Cod National Seashore is really cool.

CHatham has a great downtown for walking and a really cool public playground, but it can be more expensive to stay there so look nearby.

Have a great stay!

City historic tours

Do you have recommendations for a half day city tour of Boston in October? We took one last year in Charleston, SC and have done them in Los Angeles and San Francisco. We will be coming from Ogunquit, ME and then on to Nashua, NH for the night. Where do you pick up these tours, cost ,etc. Thanks

City historic tours

What about the Boston Duck tours? We%26#39;ve taken one in Pittsburgh and loved it. They usually last only about 2 hours.

There are several trolly companys that have booths at Quincy Market and near the Aquarium. Convenient parking garages nearby. The trollys offer free harbor cruises and/or whale watch tours and Aquarium visits along with your ticket. Just jump off and on the trolly all day and you can see the whole city in a day. Have fun.

Old Town Trolley tour is, IMO, the best one.

This is going to depend on your personal tastes. the Commons and the Gardens are beautiful. Fenway Park is a must for any sports fan. The Freedom Trail and Duck Tours are good for the general stuff. Newbury Street has great shops and restaurants. History is EVERYWHERE. The Constitution, the aquarium, Beacon Hill is beautiful. Charles Street is definitely worth a wander and a stop at Cafe Vanille for coffee or tea and a treat. LOTS of museums, harbor cruises...really, there%26#39;s too much to list.

It%26#39;s a very expensive town. Saving money is tough. Expect to drop some cash. If you are really limited then make sure to do your research and choose wisely. It%26#39;s easy to drop $100 bucks just on dinner OR cover and drinks, let alone a night that includes both.

You should be able to get contact info on all these places through google or the front desk at your hotel. It%26#39;s a great town. Enjoy yourself!!!

  • First time visitor - Confused - Hyannis or another town?

Planning on visiting cape cod for only 4 nights during the summer (possibly July) 2009. Understand there is quite a bit of traffic at this time of year. Since we only have 5 days of which 2 will be travelling to/from the cape, where would you suggest we base our stay? We generally like to be centrally located but at the same time enjoy the flavor of the place we are visiting and not be bombarded with children and crowds. However, since we have such a short stay and would like to visit Nantucket and perhaps Martha%26#39;s vineyard (which one over the other, if we are unable to visit both?)in addition to the JFK museum and Kennedy compound. If we have time, perhaps drive around and visit another town/village. Is Hyannis a good base? Or, will we be disappointed. We are presently looking at the Anchor Inn, since it overlooks the harbor and offers balconies so we could sit out in the morning and evening. We were also considering the Daniel Webster Inn in Sandwich, but are concerned about spending what little time we have on the cape travelling in a car in traffic to/from Hyannis to pick up ferries and enjoy the town itself. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

First time visitor - Confused - Hyannis or another town?

Hi, a couple of things. You can%26#39;t actually visit the Kennedy compound, (unless you are invited by one of the Kennedy%26#39;s ;o) Second - 3/4 days does not give you enough time to visit both of the Islands. Third - Hyannis will be bombarded with crowds %26amp; kids in the summer. That is high season %26amp; Hyannis is an area that attracts a lot of families. If you want quieter - and it is possible to find that on the Cape in the summer - you want to be further along on the Cape - Brewster, Wellfleet, Truro all come to mind. Another good option for you might be Falmouth, in terms of access to ferries to the Vineyard, but again Falmouth is a popular family vacation spot. As for the Islands, I think the Vineyard is the better choice for a day trip because of the availability of transportation and things to do once you are over there. Nantucket is beautiful, but a little more laid back. Both will be crowded in the summer.

First time visitor - Confused - Hyannis or another town?

I second Falmouth over Hyannis for a true Cape Cod feel. Hyannis in comparision to other towns here on the Cape can be described as a ';city';.

For a short stay in July - Falmouth can be very accommodating, It has a nice village green, and a wonderful town with restaurants and shop. You will be close to Woods Hole for the SSA or the Island Queen for a day trip to one of the islands.

BUT if you TRULY object to traffic lined roads and lots of other visitors - you might want to check out the outer cape where the crowds will be thinner but not non-existent.

Falmouth would be a good choice for you...you%26#39;ll have less driving to get anywhere but the unavoidable traffic, families and crowds are all realities of a Cape summer.

I suggest you visit Nantucket. There%26#39;s a very walkable downtown shopping area with enough choice for a lunch or dinner. One of my favorite things on Nantucket is the Whaling Museum. It%26#39;s a one of a kind place and worth a peek. If you%26#39;re 4 people or less, it%26#39;s fun to rent a little JEEP for the day, buy a great picnic lunch and head out to the magnificent Nantucket beaches.

There are Nantucket and M.V. forums on T.A. for much more information.

I think Hyannis would be a good choice. True it is more crowded than other places here....but there surely is a reason for that. All advice given so far is spot on though....you can%26#39;t go wrong no matter where you choose. The Anchor Inn is a GREAT central location if you do choose Hyannis.

We are also planning a trip to Cape Cod, but will be coming the middle of Sept. We are trying to decide where to stay and have looked at Hyannis and Sandwich. I will also look at Falmouth. We want to go to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard or Nantucket for a day trip-guess everyone is divided on which is the best for getting off the ferry and walking around. We could rent bikes and ride around the island. Any ideas or suggestions is appreciated.

I have looked at the Sea Coast Inn or Saltwinds bed and breakfast-has anyone stayed there recently?? We are bringing our son and his wife so will need two rooms.

Any ideas are welcome. Will there still be whale watch tours the middle of Sept.?

    Thanks.

You might check on Chatham, right on the Cape%26#39;s elbow. September is gorgeous on the Cape and traffic really thins out after Labor Day.

You can take the high speed ferry out of Harwichport from Sasquatucket Harbor to Nantucket for a day trip to that island.

Thanks for your help. I am looking at Chatham. How long does the ferry take to get to Nantucket?

Here%26#39;s info about the Freedom Cruise Line out of Sasquatucket Harbor in Harwich Port. Schedules and fares are listed here:

    http://www.nantucketislandferry.com/

Some have found the Free Cruise Line schedules to be restrictive; you can check out the ferries in Hyannis for other schedules/fares (hi speed and slow boat):

    http://www.hy-linecruises.com/

Hyannis and Yarmouth are awful. All other towns on the Cape would be better.

I would highly recommend Chatham. this will give you a great Cape Cod experience. You%26#39;ll be able to travel up the arm to the National Seashore...That being said, Chatham can be pricey, so you may be better off staying in Brewster or Orleans. I would stay away from Hyannis...Wherever you stay, you could still drive to Hyannis and take highspeed ferry to Nantucket (I recommend Hy-line highspeed)...day trip would be managable.....A whole different idea would be Falmouth..Woodshole is cute for lunch/shopping, and you could take the ';Island Queen'; over to the Vineyard...there are a few accomodations that would put you on the beach.

    Melody tent

I%26#39;m wondering if the Melody Tent has seating on grass as well as arena seating.

Cape Cod Charlie, you have been very helpful in the past. If I remember correctly your in Warrenville (I%26#39;m in Winfield).

Is it anything like Ravinia or Millinium park where you can bring food and drink into the area and sit on the grass?

    Thanks for the info.

    Moe

    Melody tent

No, not like what we have here. You won%26#39;t take in food or drink but you can buy champagne and eat something or another.

The tradition on the Cape that we follow is to dine before (or after) the show in one of the Hyannis restaurants on Main St. Really traditional is to get a reservation at The Paddock. Just tell them you are going to the show and they will let you know when to come and they%26#39;ll make sure you get out in time too. This is a small theater in the round. I%26#39;m so glad you are going to have this experience Moe. It is terrific.

So, Tom Skilling just said that this has been the rainiest spring on history. I was out in it tonight without my umbrella...ugh.

    Stay dry. All the best.

    Melody tent

More rain than any other spring, coldest and snowiest winter.....I don%26#39;t know about you but I%26#39;m tired of breaking all these records. I%26#39;d be o.k. with ';normal';, ';average'; etc....

Thanks for the info on the Melody Tent and eating choice.

One more thing if you wouldn%26#39;t mind.

We%26#39;ll be staying in Brewster this Aug. What is the time frame we should give ourselves to get from Brewster to Hyannis on a Fri. or Sat. night in Aug. for dinner and a show? I have only been to Cape Cod off season. I%26#39;m thinking the crowds could be something.

    Thanks Again,

    Moe

    Hi Moe -

    Great advice above.

The Melody Tent is about as far from Ravinia as you can get. I grew up going to Ravinia every summer (born and raised in Evanston) - what a spectacular venue!

The Melody Tent is very dated, with fixed seats in the round, and a slowly rotating stage. Concrete everywhere, bathrooms are basic and not all that clean, food is completely atrocious. The Melody Tent is the polar opposite of Ravinia.

That said, someone could bring the Ravinia concept to the Cape and make a bundle!

Do try and check out the occasional concerts at Eldredge Park in Orleans, there is also an annual Boston Pops concert on the Village Green in Hyannis. Neither of these greens are permanenet concert venues. Also, the Chatham Band Concerts are great family fun.

    Hope that helps!

    Enjoy.

    Thanks Cape Mermaid,

How wonderful to living in Maine....a beautiful part of the U.S.

How interesting...I was thinking (and thinking that I was saying in fact) that the Melody Tent is more cool because the performers are right there in front of you and you SEE them as well as hear them. So intimate. Completely different venues. Can%26#39;t even compare them. IF there is an artist there that you like you%26#39;ll have a great evening.

    Good point Cape Cod Charlie-

The Melody Tent is indeed very intimate, and is an interesting experience. I just wanted to be sure that anyone expecting the lush environs of Ravinia, complete with grassy areas suitable for a picnic, was forewarned. Thanks though for your insight - you are spot on.

Yes Moe - I feel very lucky to be here (and employed) on beautiful Pensobscot Bay! My sister and I both ended up on Maine islands - it is a great lifestyle. Only 20 minutes to the mainland, with great towns like Belfast, Rockland, and Camden nearby... but a world away from the hustle and bustle of route 1. We had our town report come out today - only 31 calls to the local police in the entire year! A little different than my days in Chicago%26#39;s Bucktown, pre-Bob Vila... oops wrong forum!

    Hope that helps.

Enjoy your time on the Cape!

Advice for travelling to Cape Cod by bus, where to go etc.

Hi! I am travelling to Cape Cod next week but as we don%26#39;t drive as stuck with public transport. I have downloaded all the bus routes and plan to do as follows:

Day 1 - Bus from Bostong to Plymouth and Barnstable

Day 2 - Barnstable to Provincetown

    Day 3 - Provincetown

Day 4 - Provincetown to Chatham

Day 5 - Chatham to Falmouth

Day 6 - Falmouth to NY

Does anyone have some advice - does this seem reasonable? I know it is a bit whirlwind! If anyone has any suggestions, I would be much appreciative. Thanks!

Advice for travelling to Cape Cod by bus, where to go etc.

My only comment would be to ask you how you plan to get around these towns once the bus pulls into the terminals. My guess is that the bus stations are along major routes that aren%26#39;t interesting, just busy, dusty main drags. Have you already researched this to see where you can go and stay from the bus station? The plan is fine I think for a quick trip but the busses won%26#39;t be dropping you off next to nice B%26amp;Bs by the beach, you would still have a considerable distance to get to accomodations and the beaches etc I believe. Have you looked into this?

Advice for travelling to Cape Cod by bus, where to go etc.

    Hi Jennix,

Cape Cod is not the ideal location to travel with out a car but, with that said, with a little planning you can manage. I assume you have discovered this comprehensive travel site:

    www.smartguide.org/capecod/land-links.html

and that you know where you will be staying. If you are going to stay on the Flex line (Harwich to Provincetown) then you will be able to get to your lodging and other interesting places like Coast Guard Beach, National Seashore visitor%26#39;s Center, Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary and the town of Orleans. This bus will take you up to 1 miles out of its normal route with an advanced reservation. So if you stay on the outer cape(which is only 3 miles wide) you surely will be able to get dropped off with your luggage at the door of your lodging. I would not suggest that you change your lodging every night since you will be spending most of your time hauling your luggage and traveling. Instead, why not pick an area that interests you and explore that area. Here is a suggestion:

Day 1: Bus Boston to Orleans

Day 2: Explore Orleans, East Orleans and take bikes or the Flex bus Eastham to the Salt Pond visitor%26#39;s Center and Coast Guard Beach

Day 3: Take Flex Bus to Provincetown-spend the day seeing the sights, take a whalewatch, visit the Provincelands by bike.

Day 4: Take the Flex bus to the Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary, and then to Wellfleet Center. Walk to the Pier and across Uncle Tom%26#39;s bridge

Day 5: Take the Flex bus to Harwich and Brewster or

Day 6: Orleans to Hyannis to NY

This will allow you to experience some of the small towns and natural areas that make the cape so special. I suggested staying in Orleans because you will not have a car and will need to be able to walk to restaurants and shopping.

Personally, I would prefer to have a vehicle while on Cape Cod, especially if your goal is to see many of the different villages and sights.

Thanks very much for your help, much appreciated! We%26#39;re going to look into staying in Orleans, as you are correct - travelling with bags (and trying to arrange transport from bus stations etc.) is not ideal. Thanks again!

Please also consider staying in Chatham. Not far from anything and there are a lot of downtown lodging options. It is a charming place.

Fussy, does the Flex bus serve Chatham as well as Harwich?

  • Thinking of taking the family to the Cape in July

    Hello,

My wife and I are thinking of taking our two girls (7 and 2) to the Cape this coming July. We have never been before and from reading this site Chatham sounds like a great place for first timers. Can anyone recommend places to stay and some fun things for the kids to do? We would be staying a week. Driving up from Philadelphia so we will have our car. Looking to spend about a maximum of $4k for the week. Less if possible. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Thinking of taking the family to the Cape in July

Chatham is lovely. Honestly there is so much to do. Invest in a great guide book. Here are a few ideas:

    Seal Watch

Whale Watch from Provincetown/40 min ride

    Tea at Captains House

Walk Main St and have lunch at Squire and penny candy across the street

    Local Baseball

    Town Concert

It might behoove you to contact the Chamber of Commerce for a complete listing of events. I defer to others about lodging. IMHO the B and B%26#39;s are the way to go.

Thinking of taking the family to the Cape in July

First: I think you have a workable budget. The bigger issue is you need to start looking for lodging ASAP! The good places fill up quickly!

Chatham is a great place to be on the Cape for a first time visit. (it%26#39;s where we keep our stuff). There are so many loging options here! Wayside Inn, Bradford Inn (if your kids are 12 and over, but not stuff At All), are just a few.

For a week%26#39;s stay, however, (saturday to saturday) I%26#39;d recommend securing a rental house or cottage. It%26#39;s a great way to save some cash on meals..you could save a bundle just by eating breakfast %26#39;in%26#39; for the week!

(save yourself some hassle and use a Realtor for your first time stay)

Here%26#39;s the Chatham Chamber site; you can get a list of reliable Realtors here to help you find the perfect place :

    http://www.chathaminfo.com/

Other options are Falmouth (%26#39;upper-Cape%26#39; but really closer to the lower part of the Cape closer to the bridges), Brewster (on Cape Cod Bay) and the great towns that have the National Seashore in their backyard. (Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, Provincetown). I love Harwichport too. Everyone here has their favorite; I hope you find yours!

Each town has its own Chamber of Commerce that you can access online.

Also, CapeCodCharlie, a frequent poster here and Cape DE, has a house she rents for weekly stays. She might be booked already with %26#39;repeat%26#39; tenants (a very good sign), but you might contact her through a pm to see if she has availability or knows of other rental options. She has recommended Martha Murray Real Estate in the past (as I have) for those looking for weekly vacation rentals. Good luck!

I agree with the others that your budget is realistic and you can probably do better than that if you are willing to drive to a beach and cook some meals at home. You will be able to rent a 2 or 3 bedroom house in your target area for under $2k. And given the economy, I think you will be able to find a rental even in July at this point.

Some website to check for rentals:

    www.kinlingrover.com

    www.wilkinsonre.com

    www.weneedavacation.com

    www.homeaway.com

The first two are local realtors and the second two are for homes rented by owner. We often debate the benefits of each on this board but I%26#39;m sure you can decide which type of rental you are most comfortable with.

Chatham is a great spot and have a beautiful Cape Cod feel with lots to do. Other towns that families seem to like are Harwich, Dennis, Brewster, and Orleans. And you might also look into renting a condo at Ocean Edge in Brewster (I think the best site for that is www.atlanticrealty.com) as you would find cheaper accommodations, indoor pools, tennis, access to the fun Cape Cod bike trail and a central location for exploring the Cape.

There are lots of good posts here lately about things to do with the family. Just do some searching and you%26#39;ll find many good suggestions.

This was an old response of mine to Floridguy. check his posts (click on his name) since he has done a lot of research on Chaatham. This will get you started:

Chatham is a quaint town with nice shopping and some great restaurants. I can%26#39;t really help with accomodations since we stay in a house.

    In Chatham:

    - Visit the light house

    - Stop by Candy Manor

    - Eat a casual meal at The Squire (very good chowder)

    - 4th of July parade could be fun

    - Ben Franklin%26#39;s store for inexpensive toys and knick-knacks

    - See a Cape Cod baseball league game with elite college players

    - Have a nicer meal at the Impudent Oyster (menu probably online)

    Nearby in Harwich

    - Ride Bud%26#39;s go-carts

    - Bumper boats and batting cages on Rt. 28

    - Take the ferry to Nantucket from Harwichport

    Orleans

    - Stop by a Christmas Tree Shop (In Orleans) or Ocean State Job Lot (Dennisport and maybe Chatham0 and buy inexpensive skim and or boogie boards (about $5 each). You can give them away before you leave if you are flying back.

    - Visit Skaket Beach on the bay side (warmer, calm water). Check the paper for low tide so the boys can check out the tidal flats, walk aobut 1 mile out, find crabs, and skim board. Get there early to get a parking spot for $15. Skaket has restrooms and a good snack shack (grilled chx sandwich and great onion rings)

    - Try Nauset beach for the big waves along the Atlantic. Restrooms, plenty of parking and a snack shack.

    - Take a private sailing leasson from Arey%26#39;s

    Wellfleet:

    - Visit my favorite beach - Cahoon Hollow. Ask to park at the Beachcomer and get a $15 voucher for food or drink. Eat lunch at The Beachcomber. Be prepared to walk up and down a huge dune to get to the beach.

    Provincetown:

    - Take the boys whale watching. Good shopping and great restaurants. It gets very crowded in the summer.

    -Try Art%26#39;s Dune tours.

    Seaview Playland

Today someone on the Provincetown forum listed some of his/her favorite places that no longer exist. Here%26#39;s a link to some photos of Seaview Playland in Dennisport (now defunct), one of my childhood haunts that my children were also able to enjoy for a few years. Thought some other old-timers might want to see it:

    Seaview Playland

    That was fun!

    Seaview Playland

Just home after spending a few days on the Cape and saw that they are digging up and leveling the land at Seaview Playland - does anyone know what they are planning there

    Someone thought a park maybe

Maybe the gypsy fortune teller has granted my wish and they%26#39;re going to rebuild the Barn of Fun!

Thanks for the link! My children and nephews loved that place and we were all devastated when it closed. Then Bobby Briggs Wee packet... Some change is not good. I%26#39;m going to buy some of those photos!

Well, the woman who owned it died and it wasn%26#39;t all that long after that her daughter sold it. Originally Dennis bought it for a park. At least that was the vague idea. As you know the property extends all the way down across Chase to Nantucket Sound. I%26#39;ll try to remember to talk to one of the McCormick family (owners Ebb Tide, SeaView) and share any info that I get.

Yeah I believe the town owns it but I think it is in some sort of conservation trust so I assume it will not be full of condos but it seems to be the best kept secret about what the future holds for this lot

    Just found this article

.....';Gardens, walking paths and a children鈥檚 play area are among the attractions of the new park.

    wickedlocal.com/capecod/news/x1931053993/Sea鈥?/a>

Excellent! Thanks so much for passing the information along.

Drove by the Seaview Park today - WOW in one short week they have completed a small man-made pond out in the section closest to Lower Cty Rd and Division St. - they have what appears to be a walkway that winds over gentle hills throughout the entire property....hoping that it has ocean views while strolling...... It looks like it is going to be a beautiful park the size and setting are spectacluar.

I cant wait for it to be finished - such a nice little respite in this busy beach community

Pastiche, I used to love that place. Dennisport is sleepy and sad looking these days...I hear Bob Briggs Wee Packet is not the same. Haven%26#39;t been to Wolfie%26#39;s in years.

  • Bed and Breakfasts in Provincetown

I%26#39;m planning a surprise trip with my wife to Provincetown in July and am cant decide where to stay. So far it%26#39;s between Crowne Pointe, The Red Inn, The Brass Key, Carpe Diem, and last the Somerhouse Inn. First and formost romantic is a most. Walking distance to town and views of the water. Last a two person Jacuzzi would be a bonus.

    Thanks for you help.

    Bed and Breakfasts in Provincetown

The Crowne Point is very lovely and has a nice spa. Have you considered Lands End? It is a bit out of the way but the views of the bay might be worth the extra walk.

    Bed and Breakfasts in Provincetown

Land%26#39;s End Inn, as yellowbird suggests, is very romantic and might be a good choice even though it is a bit out of the way. Check out www.landsendinn.com It is unique though rather expensive.

I don%26#39;t think you could go wrong with any of those options. And I forgot about Lands End, although it is a little out of the way (near the Red Inn) it does have spectacular views. I was over there the other day for the first time and the views up on the hill where it is located are stunning.

Kind of depends on what you are looking for in your trip. Crowne Pointe and Brass Key (owned by same people) have a large number of rooms, Carpe Diem is very nice and I think has around 18 rooms, Somerset has 12 rooms. I%26#39;m not sure how many rooms the Red Inn has and to be honest I usually think of the Red Inn Restaurant when I think of the Red Inn. And I LOVE the Red Inn Restaurant! That would be a great option for a romantic dinner.

We visit Boston in early November and my wife would like to purchase a new set of Ladies Golf clubs -where is the best place to do that? Also, has anyone any experience of taking them back in through Irish customs?

    Stockbridge or Lenox Query

    Hi Everyone,

Hope to get some advise please as from Ireland and visiting region 1st time Sept 20th for 2 night stay , previous stop will have been Stowe. I had originally thought to stay in Stockbridge at Red Lion Inn but its quite pricey I guess because of Peak Foliage time .

I then came across Hampton Terrace B %26amp; B which looks great, good reviews and more reasonable but here%26#39;s my dilema, which area would be better suited, husband %26amp; I like to walk, bike a small bit if we can maybe rent, shop a little, restaurants all the usual touristy things. Is there a big difference between these two places ? which would you recommend? we%26#39;ll have a car but it would be nice if in the evenings my husband could maybe leave the car parked and perhaps ( not essential though) have a drink so would the Hampton Terrace be fairly central to where restaurants , etc are located. If not is it possible to get a reasonable taxi ?

During the day it wouldn%26#39;t really matter too much .

So if anyone could please maybe advise me before we make final decision I would sure appreciate it.

    thanks a lot.

    Stockbridge or Lenox Query

Stockbridge and Lenox are both fairly small towns, but Lenox is, in my opinion, more interesting for walking. Stockbridge%26#39;s commercial offerings are mostly packed into one small main strip. Lenox has more of a traditional downtown with more streets to walk and things to see. It also offers a bit more in the way of restaurants and shops. Hampton Terrace B%26amp;B is right in the center of Lenox.

If you%26#39;d like a somewhat more bustling - yet still charming - town in the area you might look at Great Barrington. It offers many more restaurants, cafes, bars and stores than both the other two towns and has a movie theater to boot. The downside to Great Barrington is that many of the hotels are on a not-so-special highway outside of the town center which is not great for walking. You might be able to find something downtown however (I%26#39;m not too familiar with the hotels in GB). It%26#39;s a question of what you are looking for...

    Stockbridge or Lenox Query

This B%26amp;B in Great Barrington looks promising...

    tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g41586-d224864-…

Both towns are very expensive, but the Berkshires seem to have no trouble getting the rates. I agree that Great Barrington is a good option, there are a lot of independent motels and B and Bs in the area. Pittsfield Mass, is also an option, it is bigger and may offer more in the way of lodging and dining.

Thanks to everyone so far, will take on board.

Pittsfield is kind of depressing though :-).

Lot%26#39;s of places to walk, hike or bike Here is a bike trail link http://www.berkshirebikepath.com/page5.html

This is a pretty easy ride.

You can also bike or walk around Lenox. It can get a little hilly but last summer, I took a nice 6-7 mile bike ride around Lenox, down through Tanglewood, etc.

Lenox,Stockbridge, GB are all great choices. Another could be Williamstown which is a beautiful college town, easy to walk around and great museums, nice restaurants, etc. I would think you would be passing through it as you would be on Rt 7 coming south from VT

Hampton Terrace is a great place to stay,2 minute walk to town... the Rosens are wonderful hosts. Lenox has around 16 restaurants within walking distance...Stockbridge, maybe 4. Some of the Inns drop their rates in September (and raise them back up in October for foliage), peak foliage is usually mid October. You can go to Lenox.org, the local chamber of commerce, for information. Taxis are quite expensive in Lenox, and hard to get. A two mile ride to Tanglewood in the season is $40.00. Have a great trip!

Thanks everyone, I think I%26#39;ll stick with Lenox and Hampton B %26amp; B, and thanks for the link to the bike hikes - great.

You are all so helpful...where would we be without Tripadvisor.....Thanks again

Can%26#39;t really go wrong staying in Lenox. But, do stop in Williamstown on your way through. There are some great galleries and Williams College would be a great place to stretch your legs. Of particular interest to me when I visited the Williams College Museum of Art was the original British Reply from King George to our declaration of independence. Other than sending troops, I didn%26#39;t know he sent a letter as well.

  • First visit to the Cape & Vineyard May 12-14

We are a couple with 3 days/2 nights to spend on the Cape and/or Martha%26#39;s Vineyard and we will have a car. If we want to visit Provincetown and Martha%26#39;s Vineyard, can someone suggest a moderately priced place to stay that would be convenient. Does the mid-Cape area make sense. We want to do some long bike trips if the weather permits. Thanks for your suggestions!

First visit to the Cape %26amp; Vineyard May 12-14

If long bike trips are your main interest, I%26#39;d suggest staying somewhere close to the Cape Cod Rail Trail, which runs from Dennis to Wellfleet. Here%26#39;s a link to more information:

    www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/southeast/ccrt.htm

With just three days for your visit, you might want to stick to either MV or the Cape. I think it would be difficult to cover both in that amount of time.

    Need advice

    Hi,

I%26#39;m tihnking about taking a 4 days vacation in Cape Cod. I%26#39;m from Montreal and i%26#39;ll probably travel with 4 friends.

We%26#39;re in our early 30%26#39;s and mostly we%26#39;re looking for a quiet time by the beach, good restaurant, not necessarly nightclub but we would like to enjoy few evenings out...

We would like bed%26amp;breakfast instead of an hotel..

We would travel in july ou maybe in august but i feel it would be the high season...

    I need advice...

    Thank you in advance.

    Need advice

You mentioned July or August, but feel it would be the high season. Not sure what you meant, did you want to travel during high season? In general high season will run from the last weekend in June through Labor Day (first weekend in September).

Many people who don%26#39;t want to be here during high seaason will come in September when the weather is still very nice.

Most of the entertainers who come to Provincetown first start showing up Memorial Day weekend and are here through Labor Day weekend.

You may want to check out www.celebrateprovincetown.com. It doesn%26#39;t have the events for summer 2009 listed yet because all the schedules have not been released, but you could check the schedules for 2008 to see what kind of activities you might expect.

    Need advice

I HIGHLY recommend the John Randall House, only a block away from Commercial Street (the main strip) and the hosts are SUPERB! Check out their site @ www.johnrandallhouse.com :)

If you are looking for quiet beaches, you just need to go to the National Seashore and walk 10 minutes from the parking lot or place of entrance in any direction and voila... it is quiet. Same holds true for many bay side beaches as well. Quite of course is a relative term. If you want isolated stretches of beach, come off season.

    Interesting guest books

Has anyone visited an inn or bed %26amp; breakfast that you remember as having a particularly memorable guest book? One where you get absorbed reading the entries, because they%26#39;re more interesting than the typical ';rooms were nice, we enjoyed our stay'; variety. I am doing a research project and am interested in finding inns whose guest books contain some real history/culture buried in their entries. If anyone has any recommendations, I%26#39;d be grateful! Thanks.

    Interesting guest books

Interesting question. The Beachmere in Ogunquit, Maine had some touching entries from visitors.

    Interesting guest books

    Thanks! I%26#39;ll check it out.

The Swizzle Inn in Bermuda has the most interesting guest/visitor books I%26#39;ve ever seen in my life. In fact, they are all lined up on their mantel in one of the main rooms. The Swizzle Inn isn%26#39;t an Inn where you stay over though, it%26#39;s more of a unique pub/restaurant atmosphere with graffiti on the walls %26amp; their ceiling as well as hundreds upon thousands of business cards. There%26#39;s loads of rustic furniture and fixtures to check out all scattered here and there. The visitor/guest books date back to 1942 and are full of funny anecdotes about people%26#39;s visit to the Swizzle Inn.

I was there in 1973 %26amp; wrote in the book %26amp; years later went back again in the late 90%26#39;s and didn%26#39;t I find what I wrote in the 1973 book! It was pretty amazing to spot my handwriting like that %26amp; yes I wrote another message the 2nd time back there.

  • Taxis with Car seat

we are traveling to Boston next weekend for a couple days. i don%26#39;t want to bring our bulky car seat just for the airport run - what%26#39;s the best way to get from the airport to our hotel (downtown)? do taxis have car seats?

    Taxis with Car seat

Boston taxis are a mixed bag, but I have never seen one with an infant or toddler safety seat installed or available. Some of the newer cabs will have the LATCH system so that you can readily install your own seat, but if you%26#39;re not planning to bring one with you, obviously that%26#39;s not an option.

We have a young child, too, and have found that the easiest way to get downtown from the airport in this situation is via the public transit system (';the T';). Depending on which hotel you%26#39;re going to, you would either take the airport shuttle bus to the Airport station and then the Blue Line into town, or take the Silver Line bus from your terminal to South Station.

If you%26#39;ve got too much luggage for this to be practical, one person can take the little one on the T and the other can take a taxi with all of the luggage, meeting up at the hotel.

I%26#39;ve heard that some livery / limo services will provide carseats if you arrange this in advance, but I%26#39;ve also heard that they don%26#39;t always bring an age-appropriate seat. These services are also expensive, and in my opinion, it%26#39;s really not worth it for a quick trip downtown, especially when the T is so easy.

    Taxis with Car seat

Crazy as it seems -- taxis are exempt from being required to transport children in car seats. Not sure where you are going to, but there also is a water shuttle option

thanks for the ideas. probably best for one of us to take the shuttle/train, and the other take taxi with the luggage.

    Restaurant Suggestions??

Renting a house 8/2009. Looking for suggestions for restaurants. Dinner and Breakfast. Have been to Brax Landing in Harwich, Loved it. The Lobster Roll was the best ever. Suggestions for Chatham and surrounding area. Thanks

    Restaurant Suggestions??

Check out Ocean House,in Dennis Port: pricey but overall good value.

In Chatham: The Squire Restaurant (generally good, straightforward food; every so often they serve a %26#39;clunker%26#39;. I%26#39;ve always gotten superior product in season here.

The Impudent Oyster is also great. Expensive but lovely. I actually prefer lunch here but many go for a romantic experience at dinner.

We also enjoy The Grill restaurant near the pool and the beach at Chatham Bars Inn. Great place for a quick bite or drinks and apps.

No reservations at the Squire; you can call ahead and ask your name be put on the waiting list though. Try to get there no later than 5:00 to be seated...otherwise you might wait an hour or more for a table. Ocean House and Impudent Oyster require and take reservations during the summer months.

For a lobster roll superior to that available at Brax, try Sesuit Harbor Cafe in Dennis. Fantastic place.

Try Inaho in Yarmouth Port for the best sushi. Great bento boxes. Great everything.

    Restaurant Suggestions??

Here%26#39;s a TA thread about good breakfast places:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g185492-i369-k2052…

If you put %26#39;lobster roll%26#39; in the search box, you%26#39;ll get other suggestions. CapeMermaid had started a %26#39;lobster roll%26#39; thread last spring or summer.

I should be endorsing the Chatham restaurants, but lately, our favorites seem to be in Harwichport.

We%26#39;ve had great meals at The Port and Buca%26#39;s Roadhouse.

Vining%26#39;s Bistro in Chatham has been pretty good, too.

We won%26#39;t be returning to the Impudent Oyster. Been there 3 times in the past year, and found the food to be disappointing. Everyone%26#39;s taste is different, but the chef seems to be ';overly creative'; with some dishes and on a recent visit my scallops were overcooked and inedible.

Also experienced a very rude waitress last summer.

I won%26#39;t give them another dollar.

Re: Impudent Oyster: Good to know, Artzy! I%26#39;ve had clunkers at the Squire and once at the Ocean House, but more than once and I%26#39;d be hesitant too.

Do not leave Cape Cod without having a casual meal at Sesuit Harbor. It is just like a postcard...

    Karen

Take a little drive...into Hyannis and try the Roadhouse Cafe. Consistently good food. Really nice bar too...and the best bartender anywhere around. Also, for exclusively Italian ';El Maestro'; on West Main. Looks like a hole in the wall, but has great food. Two places the locals like to dine. Other than that, the Cape is not known for it%26#39;s %26#39;let%26#39;s write home about%26#39; great dining experiences. It is a major complaint in the community. So, I see the Ocean House mentioned several times, but just know that you may not be so lucky when you go there...

With my two suggestions, you can%26#39;t go wrong and you will not be disappointed.

    Circadia Bistro in Harwich, mmmmmm!

Welcome soon. Well, I personally don%26#39;t love Brax but the views indeed are great. I love George%26#39;s Pizza for sure. The Port has great reviews. I do love Sea Grille, all in H%26#39;Port. Some love Bucca%26#39;s. I used to like Pisces but it%26#39;s too crowded. These are all places you could try on your own. Wequasett%26#39;s 21 is to die for but pricey...

Does Il Maestro have an Italian chef?? I have been there..not thrilled..I prefer Gerardi%26#39;s on 902 Main St. in S. Yarmouth. Keep in mind traffic from Chatham to Hyannis in Aug. is NOT fun. I say, stay in your neckc of the woods..plenty of options. Actually I am surprised the Cape Cod ';experts'; are recommending places in Hyannis..phooey with that traffic mess..

Cape ';experts'; don%26#39;t get caught in Cape Traffic. ;)

We are planning to be on the Cape in mid-May and would like to find wonderful, moderate lodgings somewhere mid-Cape near the Cape Cod Rail Trail. We are a couple. Any suggestions about which town, which lodging? Thanks!

    Need help with mid-Cape lodgings!

    Hi, Trendy Gal

I have seen your other post regarding visiting Provincetown and Martha%26#39;s Vineyard. For such a short stay, I would recommend you focus on either the mainland or the island. It%26#39;s certainly possible to visit both during your short stay, but you%26#39;ll spend too much time driving and taking ferries when you want to get out and explore the area. It%26#39;s your trip, so do as you wish.

I recommend staying in a town like Brewster. It%26#39;s a pretty, former Sea Captains town that is on the Cape Rail Trail. There are bike rental shops nearby for your rides on the Trail. Nickerson State Park is also in Brewster and the park offers more bike trails to explore if your hearts desire. Scenic and charming (in the offseason) Route 6A runs through Brewster, with ample antique shops, eateries and other one of a kind shops. Try the Brewster Fish House if you both love good seafood. There are several roads off of 6A that will lead you to a pretty beach on Cape Cod Bay.

Seeing that you are visiting in early May, getting around by car will be carefree, with little traffic to contend with. You could take the 1 hour drive up to P-town if you would like to do a daytrip. Or really take your time getting to P-town by exploring all along the National Seashore in towns like Eastham, Wellfleet and Truro. You could take a 4 hour whalewatch from P-town if that interests the both of you. Take a short drive west on 6A and visit Scargo Tower in East Dennis. It%26#39;s a rather unremarkable tower, but it%26#39;s the highest point on Cape Cod and affords spectacular views. Hyannis is a half hours drive if you still wish to hop a ferry to the Vineyard.

Consider staying at Brewster By The Sea. It%26#39;s a beautiful B %26amp; B with very friendly and knowledgable innkeepers. It%26#39;s located on 6A and will run you under $200 per night. The breakfasts are delicious!

Hope this gives you some ideas. Feel free to ask more questions.

    http://www.brewsterbythesea.com/index.html

You might want to check out the Tern Inn in West Harwich. It%26#39;s about a five-minute car ride from the Rail Trail in Dennis. Not sure of your budget, but since you%26#39;re going in the off season, a room at the inn runs $100-$139, with a delicious breakfast included. I%26#39;ve posted a review here on Tripadvisor.

Where to stay??? Downtown or Back Bay or ...

This will be my first trip to Boston June 11-14. Advice on what area to find a hotel. We will be sightseeing for a long weekend. Want to be close to sights and nice area with restaurants within walking distance. Price around $200/night. Thanks

Where to stay??? Downtown or Back Bay or ...

Both are great areas to stay for exploring Boston. In the Back Bay you have upscale shopping on Newbury Street, Copley Square and lots of great restaurants. Downtown you are closer to all the Freedom Trail historic sites, Faneuil Hall (with its shopping and restaurants) and all the great Italian restaurants in the North End. It looks like the Omni Parker House has rooms for about $200 on hotels.com. If you really want to be close to the sights, that may be a good choice -- the Freedom Trail is outside the front door and it is only a 15 minute stroll through the Common and Public Gardens to the Back Bay. There are also some very good restaurants nearby. Plus, it is close to the Park Street subway stop, so you can get almost anyplace in Boston (or to Harvard Square on the Red Line) easily from there.

Where to stay??? Downtown or Back Bay or ...

    Hello there gmaday,

A few options for you to consider. I won%26#39;t way in on which location is better as I%26#39;m not local, but rather give you options in both locations:

Colonnade Hotel- room averaging $171/night when booked via the special on travelzoo.com. hotels.travelzoo.com/lodging-hotels/571725

This hotel is in the Back Bay area across from Prudential Center and recently went through renovations. Has nice rooftop pool also. Rooms are ~350 sqft with contemporary furnishings.

Jurys Hotel- $138/night on easyclicktravel.com. This hotel does have a best rate guarantee policy, so if you are interested in this hotel, I would try booking through the hotel website (make sure you book a cancelable rate!) and then fill out a claim form to get them to adjust your reservation to the low price. Located in Back Bay as well in the old Boston Police Headquarters building. This is a very good price for this hotel (I%26#39;ve never seen it this low frankly). Standard rooms are about 290 sqft.

InterContinental- #142/night on Hotwire.com. This hotel shows up on Hotwire as a 4.5 star in the Quincy Market/Financial District Zone with the amenities of non-smoking, fitness, pool, restaurant, business center, high speed internet, spa. Using betterbidding.com and the Zone, amenities, and star level, you can guess the hotel with a reasonable certainty. New hotel on waterfront in Financial District. Located next to the Aquarium and on the actual site of the Boston Tea Party, this hotel boasts large standard rooms (~400 sqft) with contemporary styling.

Nine Zero hotel- $202/night on kimptonhotels.com. Part of the Kimpton Hotel group, this hotel is located on Tremont Street across from the old Granary Burial Grounds right on the freedom trail. Basically around the block from the Parker House, so everything that Bostongal said about the location of that hotel above applies here as well. For the price above, you can book into a Premier Queen room with about 350 sqft.

There are other options, like the Sheraton (likely) on Hotwire for $106/night (which is fine but you can stay in a Sheraton anywhere) but these are the ones that stood out to me...

Let me know if you have any questions.

    :)

Gosh I wish we could edit posts around here.

    The above should say ';I won%26#39;t WEIGH in on which loaction is better.';

    whoopsies

Thanks for the great info. I was looking at most of these hotels but the Colonnade is a new addition to my list. My dh will be on business so the company will pay for the hotel up to around $200 - $250/night. So for once the price is not as much of a factor. We enjoy being on the waterfront so we%26#39;re looking at the Intercontinental ($143 hotwire) or Boston Marriott Long Warf ($195). The Nine Zero ($202) is in the Financial District that I read may not be the best area on the weekends. I am wondering if the Marriott will be mainly families with kids? Are there restaurants close to the Intercontinental?

The second area we are looking at is BackBay. Jurys is highly rated and only $138/night nonrefundable. After looking at the Colonnade for $171 it also sounds nice. Any thoughts on advantages to one of these hotels over the others.

A little background - we are a couple around 50. Enjoy sightseeing, nice restaurants and low-key, relaxing evening. Not looking for shopping as we live in a metro area and have that at home. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

    gmaday,

First, the Nine Zero is NOT in the Financial District. But even if it were, there would be nothing wrong with that. The Financial District is near the Waterfront, Fanueil Hall and the Heart of the Freedom Trail. Sure, some of the area is quiet at night, but some folks would view that positively.

If you enjoy being on the Waterfront, then the Marriott Long Wharf is the best choice. It will have a mix of everybody, including families, business people, etc. The Intercontinental is on the Fort Point Channel, close but not actually on the Harbor. But it%26#39;s only a 10 or 12 minute walk to Quincy Market and a a ton of restaurants.

In Back Bay, Jurys to me is a little better situated than the Colonnade. Closer to Downtown, more restaurants, shopping, etc.

A little background - we are a couple around 50. Enjoy sightseeing, nice restaurants and low-key, relaxing evening. Not looking for shopping as we live in a metro area and have that at home. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Sorry, thought I read in Frommer%26#39;s that Nine Zero was in downtown financial district. Fodor%26#39;s lists it in Back Bay. Jurys has a great rate of $138/nt but only on easyclicktravel.com Has anyone used this travel site? Not sure about their cancellation policy. I plan on calling Jurys to see if they will price match. They are rated #1 on TA so considering them at the top of my list? How is the location?

Also looking at the Boston Marriott Long Wharf. Rate of $195 with AAA. Any other suggestions?

If you can get Jurys for $138, definitely go with it. You won%26#39;t be disappointed. The location is excellent for getting around Boston.

The price I%26#39;m seeing for the Jurys on EasyClickTravel is $255 per night. Was the $138 price a deal that came and went in a hurry?

We will be in Boston for 3 nights in September at the end of a Montreal-Boston cruise. We are considering the John Jeffries House, the Taj Boston, and the Lenox. Any input on any of these?

boston international airport to wrentham village

How far by car is it from the airport to wrentham village?

Where would a good place to stay after Wrentham as we have to drive to Conneticut the following day.

boston international airport to wrentham village

Without traffic, it is about 50 minutes. See directions:

    maps.google.com/maps…

You should allow extra time to get out of the airport and to get your car, etc.

There are some motels/hotels around the area, but I don%26#39;t know the details. There are certainly some on Route 1 in Foxboro, but not sure where else.

boston international airport to wrentham village

There is an entrance to The Ted Williams right near the car rentals. Hop on here and follow signs to 93 south to 95 south to 495 north.

I would at least get thru Providence after the outlets. Post the question on the Providence Forum.

295 goes around Providence and there are many places to stay here.

For places to stay I would look in Milford, Westborough, and Marlbrough.

They are all north (on Rt 495) of Wrentham and very close to the Mass Pike, which I am sure you will be using to go to CT. You could also use Rt 290 - 395 depending on where you are going in CT

You can be on the Pike within 15 mins of all those towns and the hotels are right off the highway.

Sorry, that is Marlborough or sometimes spelled Marlboro

If you want to go the Pike then I would get 495 behind me if travelling morning rush hour. Maybe even look into The Sturbridge area to stay for the night.

I agree with eileengs2 about where to stay. If it is during the work week, the Rt. 495/Mass Pike (rt.90) interchange is difficult. Where in CT do you have to be?

    Going to Hartford.

Why not drive to Hartford right from the Outlets? It%26#39;s only 90 minutes away. It seems a waste of money to spend a night somewhere when Hartford is so close.

I agree..go right to or near Hartford.

Hartford has a good forum...post a question on where to stay. This is another place with a tough morining commute.

We are not getting into Boston airport until 3.30pm

so by the time we collect car and get out to Wrentham

I guess it would be closed. So I was thinking of

staying near to Wrentham and get to it early in the

morning of 9th June and spend a few hours there and

then head to Hartford as we are staying there for a

    few nights with friends.

We have no other available time to go to Wrentham.

    Bradford versus Captain's House

My wife and I are coming by ourselves, so we prefer a quiet place -- not a bunch of kids running around. Based on that, Bradford might be right, because I see they don%26#39;t allow kids under 12. On the other hand, Captain%26#39;s House looks nice, and it seems like it might attract more adults than kids - being that it%26#39;s a B%26amp;B as opposed to a hotel. Rates are roughly the same; maybe Bradford is a tad higher. Considering everything including atmosphere and location, which would you guys recommend between the two? Thanks.

    Bradford versus Captain's House

Hi there: For some reason, I wasn%26#39;t able to send you an answer to your message...you wouldn%26#39;t %26#39;download%26#39;!

OK: The Bradford Inn, other than the main house and a few other buildings, is set up in new, separate buildings. I think there are 8 rooms in the townhouse buildings that were purpose built; the other buildings have various sized rooms. There%26#39;s a pool at the Bradford. The decor is 80%26#39;s Ethan Allen %26#39;cherry wood%26#39; and chintz. My visiting friends who have kids love it here. The breakfast, I think, is cereal and pastry. There are plenty of kids, 12 and over, staying on the property and enjoying their small pool.

The Captain%26#39;s House is lovely. The real deal. It isn%26#39;t downtown, but it%26#39;s a close enough drive. Much better choice, for you I think, than The Bradford.

    Bradford versus Captain's House

    Also, a really lovely choice:

    The Carriage House Inn

    tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g41499-d77643-R…

I%26#39;ve got to agree with fussyguest, we stayed at the Carriage house in 2006 and loved it so much we came all the way from Scotland the following year to stay again.

If you want to be in the center of town, the Bradford Inn. If you want to be a mile out of town, The Captains House. They are really two completely different properties. Having worked at both, If I were celebrating an event; birthday, anniversary, etc. or were going to spend a lot of time in my room reading, I would go to the Captains House. If I were the more active type, I would stay at the Bradford Inn, everything is in a little better walking distance from there.

Fussyguest is a little outdated with her Bradford information and may be mixing up the Wayside and the Bradford.

Hello. I%26#39;m not confused between the two properties at all. Not even a little bit. In what way have things changed at the Bradford (since this past Christmas???!!!!...don%26#39;t think so).

Here%26#39;s the Bradford Inn%26#39;s website. You can take a look through their photo gallery and judge for yourself:

Would really like to see a game while in Chatham In August. Where can I find the schedule? Has anyone been to a game? Cost?

    Chatham A's baseball team

Here%26#39;s the website with the 2009 schedule:

    http://www.capecodbaseball.org/home_post.htm

No tickets and all the games are Free! The games are fantastic. You%26#39;ll love it.

I don%26#39;t know when in August you%26#39;re visiting, the regular season ends August 5th and then the playoffs go for about a week after that.

    Chatham A's baseball team

    Here%26#39;s the Chatham A%26#39;s website:

    www.chathamas.com/index.cfm…

Notice that the name has changed from Chatham Athletics to the Chatham Anglers. I like that!

We are there 8/1 - to 8/8. Looks like we will be able to see at least 1 or 2 games. Is it hard to get in?

Not at all hard. You can park on Depot Rd. near Chatham Elementary School and watch the game at Veteran%26#39;s Field from your own chair on the hill or you can try for a seat in the bleachers.

We have a new baseball field. It%26#39;s beautiful.

oops! meant to include this link, it has pictures of the field and other Chatham photos:

    …chatham.ma.us/public_documents/…index

While the games, are, technically, ';free,'; they do pass a hat around during the game, asking for contributions. Since they don%26#39;t gouge on drinks or snacks, I usually like to throw in a few bucks. I only mention this in case you might choose to do the same...

I%26#39;m glad someone finally mentioned the ';passing of the hat';. Also the game is easy to get into, however parking may be an issue. Not a whole lot of parking around the field area.

Sure you can park at local restaurants and take up their patron parking, but that%26#39;s kind of rude isn%26#39;t it. You could also park illegally on the street and make a traffic hazzard, but that seems kind of rude too.

Finding parking is difficult so arrive early, get a snack, and enjoy. They are a lot of fun, plus you never know who you will see in the Majors later...

The Chaham A%26#39;s fansite (not the official website) has suggestions for parking too:

    http://capeleaguefan.com/chatham.htm

Nobody will consider it %26#39;rude%26#39; or a %26#39;hazard%26#39; if you park in a business lot if the business is Closed for the day. If you%26#39;re parked in a lot of an open business and you walk to a game I guess you could be towed...

We are looking for a reasonably priced hotel outside of Boston but near or on a subway line into the city. Planning on spending a couple of days in August.

reasonable hotel outside of boston on or near subway

Hi nancy, where around Boston are there sights you want to see? Do you need a pool or other amenities?

reasonable hotel outside of boston on or near subway

We have been to Boston before, but we would probably do the usual tourist things such as the freedom trail, quincy market etc. A clean hotel and decent bed is all we need, as we will be gone most of the day spending it in the city. Most important would be a subway within a short walk from the hotel.

Try the Marriott Courtyard in Revere. They run a free shuttle to the airport subway station where you can hop on the blue line and in two stops you are at the Aquarium stop which is right at Fanueil Hall. When you want to get back, take the subway back to the airport and call the hotel and they send the shuttle to pick you up.

Druid: Nice tip...do you think they run a shuttle to Kelley%26#39;s?

I love going into Boston- I ALWAYS use Priceline and use the ';Name our own Price'; feature- The only downside is that you cannot change once you name your price- I just booked the Embassy Suites at the airport for $72 and that included the fees and taxes-I did not know the hotel I would be getting until after my price was accepted but I was able to pick the location in Boston as well as star level- I can%26#39;t even estimate the amount of money Priceline has saved me over the years and I have been using them for 10+ years-

The hotels in Revere are not on the Subway Lines, even though the subway does go to Revere Beach. Instead, so a search in the box above on ';hotels on the T';. We have discussed this many times in the past.

    Red Sox tickets

This will be our second trip to Boston. Amazing city! The first time we visited we wanted to make sure we saw the Red Sox v.s. NY Yankees. Paid outrageous prices for the tickets ';on-line';. To guarantee tickets should we buy on-line or can you purchase them at the stadium for the face value of the ticket? Suggestions?

    Red Sox tickets

It is extremely unlikely that you%26#39;d be able to buy tickets for any particular game at the Box Office, so if you want to be sure to go, buy on-line.

    Red Sox tickets

Buy from either Stubhub or aceticket.com

Last time I looked you could still purchase tickets for certain games (games are usually mid-week). You could maybe go that route and plan your trip around the day of game. Also, every once in a while there is a ticket drop where a certain number of tickets are held until several days before the game and then go on sale. If you live close and plan to drive that would be an option.

Roadtrip to Boston for Red Sox/Jays Game

Hello all. First time to the Boston forum (and it will be our first time to Boston too!). We are beginning the planning stages of a trip for our family (DH and I and 2 sons ages 5 and 10). We are looking at coming the end of August to see a Red Sox and Jays game and to explore beautiful Boston.

We%26#39;re contemplating staying at the Westin Copley Place. Does that seem like a reasonable choice and close to Fenway? Should we drive and park at Fenway, or would we be better off catching a cab to the stadium ?

I%26#39;ll be heading out to get a guidebook shortly so I can do a little research first, but just wanted to get a general sense of whether our location choice seems okay.

Also, having never been the ones cheering for the opposing team, anyone have any indication as to how we (or more particularly our boys) will be treated arriving at Fenway dressed in Blue Jays attire :-) ?

Thanks in advance for any help (and I%26#39;ll probably have lots more questions)!

Roadtrip to Boston for Red Sox/Jays Game

The Westin is a perfect location for your stay. You can either walk to the park (20 minutes or so depending on pace) or simply hop on the T at Copley and take it 2 stops to Kenmore. Very convenient.

Where are your seats? In general, the only area I%26#39;ve seen opposing fans have any issue at all is the bleachers - that being said, I think it had as much to do with the behavior of the opposing fans. There%26#39;s always a chance you%26#39;ll be seated near some drunk meatheads and have to deal with the occasional dirty look if the game is not going well for the Sox. But honestly, as long as you%26#39;re respectful (i.e. don%26#39;t be obnoxiously over-the-top, taunt anyone, etc.), you%26#39;ll be treated with respect. And no offense, but the Blue Jays are not generally a team that inspires a lot of angst in Sox fans. You%26#39;ll be fine!

Roadtrip to Boston for Red Sox/Jays Game

    ';And no offense, but the Blue Jays are not generally a team that inspires a lot of angst in Sox fans. You%26#39;ll be fine!';

LOL, yes none taken. We keep hoping this will be the year the Jays turn it around though!

Thanks so much for your help. Glad to know the hotel seems a good choice, and we will take your advice about walking to the stadium (or catching the ';T';).

Generally speaking you don%26#39;t want a car any place NEAR fenway park on game day, so the plans sound like good ones!!!

Welcome to Boston%26#39;s forum. We love to answer questions and are blessed with a great group of people knowledgeable about the area.

Boston is a compact city and easy to get around by foot or by the %26#39;T%26#39;, our public transporation system. (www.mbta.com). The Westin is in a great location for your needs. Be sure to ask, however, how much it will cost to park your car. We often find that the additional fees sometimes surprise our visitors.

Do you already have tickets for a game? Just went on the Red Sox website and see there are no tickets for sale at the moment for the Toronto series at the end of August. Getting tickets is a hurdle you%26#39;ll have to pass. If you are not able to get them direct from the Sox www.redsox.com,, you%26#39;ll have to go through the re-sale route which means inflated prices -- check out www.acetickets.com, www.stubhub.com

As for the fans, the majority of us are nice! (Maybe not so much when the Yankees are in town). There are always, unfortunately, some liquored up folks that just lose it and don%26#39;t behave and I%26#39;ve seen that in many sections not just the bleachers. I would not be so concerned considering its the Blue Jays. One suggestion for your family would be to check out the alcohol free sections - Grandstand 32 and 33

Thank you all so much for this helpful information! I hope you don%26#39;t mind that I will be back with several more questions, I%26#39;m sure.

Thanks also for the links to the resale sites for the Red Sox tickets. I hope we can get them directly through the Red Sox though.

Also nice to know about the fans and that we should have no problems. But hey - things can change! The Jays are currently leading in the east! (Okay, so we%26#39;re only a week into the season, but I have to enjoy these things while I can...)

Any suggestions for the best guidebook to Boston? We will only be there for a few days, so we don%26#39;t need anything too extensive, but a book with some decent maps and a good overview of things to see would be great. Thanks again!

Some of us remember well when the Blue Jays were the monsters of the American League, and none of us should ever take them lightly--even in their first couple of seasons as expansion lightweights, they were known to give the Sox fits. Roy Halladay might be the best pitcher in the game.

Fenway is a fun and friendly place. You should have no issues at all. If you do run into any of the aforementioned drunken jerks, just contact a security guard--but I doubt very much you%26#39;ll have any occasion for it. Have a great visit.

Tickets to Sox games are actually much easier to come by this year than in the past. Ticket prices are sky-high and even though the Sox froze prices for the first time in forever, the recession is certainly effecting them. On top of that, overall interest is declining - viewership of the games was down last year by 20% from the year before, if you can believe it.

I would use a reseller as a last resort only, and really shop around, because you should be able to get a good deal. Check ebay.com I would be surprised if you can%26#39;t find something close to face value.

Regarding rowdy behavior, I would stay away from the bleacher seats, there is a lot of fowl language in that section after several beers. Pay attention to the screen before the game there, they will post a telephone number a fan can call to report unacceptable behavior. The Red Sox organization does not tolerate unsportsmanlike conduct or fowl language from rowdy fans any more, thankfully.

I doubt anyone will bother you wearing a Jay jersey, my nephew wore an Orioles shirt to a Baltimore game. He went over to the pitcher box (we were in bleachers) to encourage the team and one of them gave him a ball.

Wrentham Outlet through Go Boston Card

If you are spending the whole day there, it%26#39;s a waste to use the Go Boston for getting to Wrentham. The cost if you go on your own is $36 round trip - way less than the cost of a 1-day Go Boston card.

    Thanks for the reply.

5 days from NYC to Portland Maine

What%26#39;s the best way to spend four days traveling from NYC to Portland, Maine? Will be traveling the last week of May with 3 adults, 1 teenager? We%26#39;ve never been to New England, love nature, not too much on museums. Any help with an itinerary would be much appreciated.

5 days from NYC to Portland Maine

A couple of key questions: Are you driving? And what is your feelings about going to Boston? Not exactly the place for nature, but a lot of other beauty. We would be remiss if we didn%26#39;t highly suggest going there. You could spend much of your 5 days there.

5 days from NYC to Portland Maine

You could stop in Mystic, Connecticut first as a thought by spending a few hours there checking out their shops %26amp; restaurants, then head up to Boston. Spend the night there %26amp; enjoy Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Paul Revere%26#39;s House in the North End and around 5PM or so have dinner at La Summa%26#39;s on Fleet Street or Mamma Maria%26#39;s @ North Square, it%26#39;s up to you on where you want to go to dinner, you%26#39;ll have lots %26amp; lots of choices, believe me.

After breakfast the next morning, drive further north to either Newburyport, MA or Portsmouth, NH, spend a few hours at either town %26amp; then you could head up to Portland, Maine, where it%26#39;s only an hour drive from Portsmouth any way, just cruise up I-95 to the Maine Turnpike, bear off to the right for it, you%26#39;ll see the signs for Maine in around Portsmouth, NH...

In Portland, Maine see if you can get a room at the Holiday Inn By the Bay. They have really nice views from their bay rooms of Casco Bay. It%26#39;s located in a convenient location to walk to ';Old Port'; for dining %26amp; shopping. They have an indoor pool %26amp; an outdoor pool, it%26#39;ll still be too early for their outdoor one, but keep it on the back burner for when you return in the summer months!

While in Portland, you really should get over to Rte 1 just a little south of Portland to see Lenny the Chocolate Moose, I thought I was seeing things when I saw him! Here%26#39;s info on him:

Also if you like lobster %26amp; other seafood? GO to the Lobster Shack at Two Lights, it%26#39;s located at the end of Two Lights Road on the rocky shores of Cape Elizabeth, Maine--The Lobster Shack is an award-winning restaurant that has been a local landmark since the 1920s. Enjoy your meal oceanside on the picnic tables, that are just above the crashing surf, below the lighthouse and next to the fog horn. Or stay in their dining room, watching the ships entering Portland Harbor and the local fishermen haul up their daily catch:

Enjoy your New England visit, hopefully you have nice weather for it, I%26#39;ll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I forgot to tell you, GO to see the Portland Headlight while you%26#39;re visiting Portland, even cruising along past the Old Port to Shore Road is awesome as you head in to Fort Williams Park for the lighthouse, wait till you see it...park your car %26amp; bring comfortable shoes for this little jaunt in this park, it%26#39;s well worth it...it%26#39;s a beautiful time of year, bring your camera, the flowers are out %26amp; everything is so beautiful %26amp; it%26#39;s all starting right now...

    www.portlandheadlight.com

I should have mentioned that we are driving. Thanks so much for your suggestions they sound just like the things we%26#39;re looking for, your food and sightseeing descriptions are right-on for our group (all that talk of a chocolate moose is making me hungry).

Since we don%26#39;t have a lot of time and we%26#39;d like to save Boston for another time, do you have any other suggestions for a first night stay? Is Cape Cod too far out of the way, or too cold that time of year or what about Newport?

That%26#39;s a good thought, if it were me, I%26#39;d go right to Newport in a heart beat where it doesn%26#39;t matter what time of year you%26#39;re there. Checking out a mansion or two would be pretty neat. I would save Cape Cod for another time when you can stay for a few days...

    I concur.

A good website for finding places to take in natural beauty in Massachusetts:

    http://www.thetrustees.org/

You might consider coming through the Berkshires in Western Mass on your way to Portand...

NoMo gave you some great suggestions.

I think Newport is a great idea.

NYC to Newport, RI is about 180 miles and less than a 4 hour drive.

You can do a brief stop in Mystic, CT

Newport, RI to Portland, ME is also about 180 miles

You can do a brief stop in Portsmouth, NH on your way to Portland, ME.

Thank you all so very much.

Newport it is, with a stop along the way in Mystic for the first night. We actually have one additional night along the way, we don%26#39;t have to be in Portland until the 3rd night and then we%26#39;ve got 2 additional nights in Portland, any suggestions for the 2nd night. What about Newburyport or Portsmough, NH or Kennebunk or whatever you suggest?

Also, any suggestions for restaurants in Newport?

(Sorry, I keep asking more questions)

    On the road again

Neither is a good place if you are planning on going into Boston. Is that why you%26#39;re returning? If not, what do you plan on doing?

    On the road again

Hi Alanm, I am going back because by then I will have my Mass. Nurse Aide Certification and I will have a better chance of seeking employment because we are planning on moving to Mass between now and june of 2010. We don%26#39;t have a lot of money to spend in better hotel for a whole week, so I don%26#39;t have many options. I am looking to live in Grafton/North Grafton, so I am trying to stay in a hotel not to far from there. My brother said we can stay with him in Worcester but I want to cover myself, because you never know.

  • Trip this week - clothing?

    Hi,

We arrive in Boston tomorrow for 4 days, then heading to Cape Cod and New York. How is the weather, is it cold. Had a look at the forcast but not sure what to take - thinking light jacket, cardigan and jeans?

    Trip this week - clothing?

Yes, layers is the way to go so you can strip off if too warm. Make it a rain jacket as they are predicting rain off and on all week. It can still get fairly chilly at night but generally it%26#39;s spring and probably a bit warmer during the day now than Scotland.

    Trip this week - clothing?

The Cape weather prediction is low 60s during the day, low 50s at night. Rain and showers until Wednesday, then partly cloudy w/possible showers the rest of the week.

Prediction for NYC, high 50s Mon-Tue w/rain. Says it will warm up to 65-72 the next several days, partly cloudy w/showers. Low 50s at night through the week.

    Have a safe pleasant trip.

You might throw in a pair of shorts in case it gets warm. Definitely cardigan/sweatshirt, windbreaker...layers as it gets chilly at night but can be very warm during days. Cape Cod has slightly different weather/temps. When you do the weather checking online, check Boston and CC separately.

';Peak season'; for Boston area hotels

Just wondering what the peak seasons are for Boston area hotels. I%26#39;m debating whether I should wait closer to the time of travel to book a hotel, or whether it would be better to book now. I will be in the Boston area around the end of June-early July.

';Peak season'; for Boston area hotels

    Hello claireadams,

You could always book something now that is cancelable/refundable and that way if you find a better deal later on you are not locked into it. What are your exact dates and how many are in your party?

    Keep an eye on www.travelzoo.com/search/?q=boston%26topcat=2

    for deals...

';Peak season'; for Boston area hotels

I agree, book something now that you can cancel within a reasonable time without paying a penalty in case you find a better deal later. Boston is a very busy place around the 4th of July. We have one of the biggest holiday celebrations/ the Boston Pops/fireworks etc. in the country. Also the Tall Ships are coming around the 8th of July so finding a room won%26#39;t be that easy the first week or two in July. Boston Hotels can be very expensive. Check surrounding area hotels that have free shuttles to the airport. You can pick up the subway into town easily that way and the hotels are priced much better.

I think really peak season for hotels in Boston occurs in May (college graduations) and October (foliage, conventions start up again). July 4th in Boston is celebrated in a big way (Pops concert at the Hatch Shell/fireworks), so that is a really busy time, too. So, I agree with pickles in that you should book something you can live with now that is cancelable and keep an eye open for a better deal.

I%26#39;ve lived in Boston for a long time, and usually my advice is to book early, months in advance, so you can get a room at a decent price (rather than not get a room at all or pay crazy prices far from where you want to stay), particularly in the fall, when everything books up months ahead.

But I think the current economy has changed things a bit. I had family come to town for Easter, and some pricey hotels were offering good last minute deals (under $200). Depends on how much you want to gamble...

Boston hotels do a lot of conferences, so you can be looking off-peak and still not find much choice.

Early July is busy, as many people take vacations for the Fourth of July. Boston has a big celebration. If you want to visit then, you should book sooner rather than later.

Hi! Just to add to what has been said here...busy season can really change in Boston depending on the weather, conferences, holidays, etc. but also, if you are looking for a sat night stay in the summer you%26#39;re up again wedding season so I%26#39;d book earlier.
